Code of Conduct

Maryland Developmental Soccer League (MDSL) Code of Conduct

The MDSL Code of Conduct applies to all participants at league and tournament events, including players, coaches, parents, and spectators. Adherence to this code is essential to ensure a positive and safe soccer experience for all children. Failure to comply, as determined by the Board of Directors, may result in sanctions including reprimand, suspension, or expulsion from leagues, tournaments, and events.

The MDSL encourages participation in youth soccer while balancing discipline, achievement, and enjoyment. Adult role models—coaches, parents, and spectators—have a responsibility to promote good sportsmanship, fair play, and respect, creating a positive environment for children to grow both as athletes and as individuals.

Code of Conduct: Players

  1. Play by the rules.
  2. Play fairly and exercise good sportsmanship.
  3. Work equally hard for yourself and your team. Team success benefits everyone.
  4. Cooperate with coaches, teammates, opponents, and officials. Without them, there would be no game.
  5. Show respect to opponents at all times.
  6. Be gracious in defeat and dignified in victory.
  7. After each game, offer congratulations or say “good game” to the opposing team.
  8. Play for the fun of soccer!

Code of Conduct: Coaches

  1. Promote fun, friendships, and learning new skills.
  2. Treat referees, coaches, administrators, and opponents with respect and dignity.
  3. Provide positive reinforcement and encouragement. Remember, it’s only a game—have fun.
  4. Ensure that equipment and facilities are safe and appropriate for all players’ age and ability.
  5. Respect the rights, dignity, and worth of every young person, regardless of ability, culture, or religion.
  6. Recognize that your attitude influences players, coaches, and spectators.
  7. Accept official decisions, even if they seem unfair.
  8. Conduct yourself for the good of the game, your team, and your program.

Code of Conduct: Parents/Spectators

  1. Be your child’s biggest fan! Support them unconditionally.
  2. Remember that children play for enjoyment, not for adult approval.
  3. Encourage participation—do not force it.
  4. Focus on effort and performance, not winning or losing.
  5. Encourage children to play by the rules and resolve conflicts peacefully.
  6. Never ridicule or yell at a child for mistakes or losses.
  7. Model respect by appreciating skillful plays from all participants.
  8. Support efforts to eliminate verbal and physical abuse from soccer activities.
  9. Treat coaches, officials, and administrators with respect. These volunteers provide valuable community service.
  10. Report all injuries, medical conditions, or special circumstances to the coach.
  11. Ensure your child arrives ready to play, in uniform, with proper safety equipment, and on time.
  12. Respect the rights, dignity, and worth of every young person, regardless of gender, ability, culture, or religion.
  13. Do not openly question or criticize referees. Accept results gracefully and encourage your child to do the same.
  14. Respect the authority of the coach. Avoid giving instructions from the sidelines that conflict with the coach’s guidance.
