Code of Conduct

MDSL Code of Conduct
The Maryland Developmental Soccer League (MDSL) Code of Conduct applies to all players, coaches, parents, and spectators participating in league or tournament events.
Our goal is to ensure that every child’s soccer experience is positive, safe, and enjoyable. Adherence to this code helps foster respect, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout all MDSL activities.
Failure to follow this code, as determined by the Board of Directors, may result in disciplinary action — including reprimand, suspension, or in extreme cases, expulsion from leagues, tournaments, or events.
Purpose
The MDSL exists to encourage participation in youth soccer and to teach the game in a way that balances discipline, achievement, and enjoyment.
As coaches, parents, and fans, we must recognize that our words and actions — both verbal and non-verbal — have a lasting impact on young players.
By modeling good sportsmanship, fair play, and respect, we help our children develop not only as athletes but as individuals of strong character.
Code of Conduct
Players
- Play by the rules and show good sportsmanship.
- Work hard for yourself and your team.
- Respect coaches, teammates, opponents, and officials — without them, there is no game.
- Be gracious in defeat and humble in victory.
- Always show respect to opponents and congratulate them after each game.
- Play for the fun of the game!
Coaches
- Promote fun, friendships, and skill development both on and off the field.
- Treat referees, coaches, administrators, and opponents with respect and dignity.
- Use positive reinforcement — remember, it’s a game, so enjoy it!
- Ensure all equipment and facilities are safe and appropriate for the players’ age and ability.
- Respect the rights and worth of every player, regardless of ability, background, or religion.
- Accept official decisions and maintain composure at all times.
- Conduct yourself for the good of the game, your team, and your program.
Parents & Spectators
- Be your child’s biggest fan — support them unconditionally.
- Remember that soccer is for your child’s enjoyment, not yours.
- Encourage participation without pressure or criticism.
- Focus on effort, learning, and teamwork rather than winning.
- Never ridicule or yell at players for mistakes or losses.
- Model positive behavior — applaud good play by all teams.
- Support efforts to eliminate verbal and physical abuse from all soccer activities.
- Treat coaches, referees, and program staff with kindness and respect — they volunteer their time to support your child’s development.
- Inform coaches of any injuries, medical conditions, or special circumstances.
- Ensure your child arrives on time, properly equipped, and ready to play.
- Respect the referee’s authority. Never question their honesty or judgment — especially when they are youth referees still learning.
- Allow coaches to coach. Avoid shouting instructions from the sidelines. Relax, enjoy the game, and trust the process.
Acknowledgment
